Birth and origination. This tree gets its name from the first letter of the Druidical alphabet, which also represents beginnings.

Making a mark that distinguishes your personal territory on the job, at home, or in a situation. Birch rods were used in ancient rites called Beating the Bounds in which people would walk and mark their lands (see Wand).

Sturdiness. This tree is even hardier than an oak.

Matters of communication, especially writing. Birch bark was predominantly used in the ancient world as a type of paper.

A fresh start that leads to fruitful manifestation. In many rural regions, the blossoming of the birch marks the beginning of the growing season.

As the Lady of the Woods, the birch also represents refined grace and elegance.

Interpretation 2 — Theresa Cheung

Birch is a symbol of honesty, virtue and honor, perhaps because of its tall, straight trunk, pure white bark and translucent catkins. The birch tree is also known as the tree of rebirth, spring and fertility. People were once ’birched’ to drive out evil spirits, whilst twigs were given to newly weds to ensure fertility. These twigs are still used today for invigoration in Scandinavian saunas and spas. Birch therefore may suggest dispelling negative energies and influences, or the need for an honest fresh start.

Interpretation 3 — Martha Clarke

The birch is considered a sacred tree in eastern Europe and central Asia. In ancient times, it was believed to ward off malign spirits. Furthermore, it was used as a channel of communication between gods and humans. When it appears in dreams, the birch represents the beginning of important projects. The shape of its trunk—straight or twisted—could indicate whether or not those impending deals are on the right track.
